BODAKI - Orthodox Church of St. Demetrius
Orthodox Church
IN BODAKI
This modest and not big Orthodox church became a witness to dramatic events, but it has lasted until today to remind us of them.
The history of Bodaki started in the 18th century. The village is mentioned in the documents concerning villages that were forming part of the Biecz District. The name comes from one of the families who lived on this land – Bodakowie. The place was a stonework centre. Not far away sandstone was extracted. Pavement slabs were produced, among others, which were used to pave the streets of Gorlice. The Lemkos who lived here also carved in wood and made plates, case boxes and figurines. At the end of the 19th century, oil fields were discovered at the end of the 19th century.
After World War II, as a result of the Vistula Operation, the local population was resettled and the Orthodox church remained without the faithful. The communist authorities turned it into a stable and it regained its original function only around 1956, when the displaced started to come back to their native territory.
The Orthodox church of St. Demetrius is decorated in a very modest way and on the outside it is quite small and has no tower. The church is oriented. A wooden wall with contemporary icons and paintings acts as an iconostasis. Their arrangement corresponds to a religious function. The holy gate is what has remained from the past. It is decorated with vegetal motives and medallions of four evangelists. Another remnant from earlier times is a neo-Gothic feretory from the 20th century.
