LUBLIN - Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Victory Rectorial Church

Despite such incidents like fire or even attempts to destroy the walls of the church by robbers, the church survived and today it constitutes a wonderful example of Gothic architecture. Huge buttresses are a proof of this, as well as the rhythm of details directing us vertically i.e. towards Heaven. The portal of the church kept the shape of an ogive so characteristic for Gothic.

Church

IN LUBLIN

The Lublin rectorial church is not only an impressive monument but also a witness to exceptional moments in the history of Poland. King Władysław Jagiełło himself decided about its construction because he wanted to make a votive offering for winning the Battle of Grunwald. In 1412, the church was founded and 14 years later the nuns of the Order of the Bridgettines were brought to take care of the church and to manage it. This decision was symbolic, because it was precisely the patron saint of this order who was to have predicted the fall of the Teutonic Knights, which was sealed by the victory of joint Polish-Lithuanian troops. The Bridgettines took care of the church until the 19th century, then, for some time, the Visitation Sisters stayed there and finally it became the rectorial church and it has remained so to this day.

Interestingly, the very first steps inside the church are surprising. Why? Well, visitors have to take a few steps down. The reason for this is that with the growth of Lublin, the level of the ground went up with each new layer of road surface and pavements. In the meantime, the church has been standing in the same place for 600 years and as a point of reference seemed to be getting lower, even though it dominated the city for many centuries. Inside, we will find many fascinating monuments.

Over the next centuries, the church underwent refurbishments and renovation works. The interior is white as a reference to the chastity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thanks to the work of researchers, several priceless fragments of Gothic polychromy were discovered in the attic. They survived precisely thanks to their location, after all, even during a refurbishment an attic remains a forgotten place. Thanks to this, it was possible to uncover fragments depicting a medieval town, groups of knights and the image of a king with a squire. According to researchers, they refer to similar works executed in a church in Augsburg in 1420.

Among beautiful paintings, the image of St Maximilian Maria Kolbe stands out with a clear reference to death camps. It is worth paying attention to the picture of St Anthony placed before the pulpit. The exceptional mood of the interior is determined by pews. They are covered with paintings and bas-reliefs, and date from the 17th century.

The neo-Gothic main altar on the one hand enchants us with subtle details, on the other with elegance and lightness. Its openwork form is stressed by plating and right in front of it there is a bright figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary defeating the snake as a symbol of evil. In the same altar, the painting of St Birgitta from the 15th century was placed. It is the oldest painting in Lublin. Unfortunately, it is hardly ever shown.

Side altars present to us a true reredos decorated with ogival bays and pinnacles. They are dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary (the northern one) and to St Joseph (the southern one). In the wood panelling of the first one a door to the sacristy has been incorporated. The altars date from the 20th century.

Attentive observers should not miss a cycle of paintings representing the life of St Birgitta. These are seventeen works showing the life of the saint and those closest to her. They were offered in the 17th century by Dorota Firlejówna, the abbess. Also thanks to her efforts, richly decorated stone pews called stalls appeared in the church. At the same time, a quadrilateral bell tower was added to the church.

Just like every Gothic church, also the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Victory rectorial church in Lublin has a delightful ceiling. Above the presbytery, there are statues of four evangelists with their attributes: a lion – St Marc, an angel – St Matthew, an ox – St Luke, an eagle – St John. Next to them, we can admire angels with palms of victory in reference to the victory of Jagiełło at Grunwald. In addition, vegetal patterns rich in details attract our attention.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Victory rectorial church in Lublin is impressive for many reasons. It is worth spending some time to visit it and to meditate among the old walls. This is also an ideal reason to visit Lublin, which has a lot more fascinating monuments and places for tourists to visit.
