CHOCISZEWO - St Leonard Church
CHURCH
IN CHOCISZEWO
The church is oriented, has a log structure and has one nave. On the two sides of the nave there are elevated galleries. In the front, the building is decorated with a tower having a quadrilateral tented roof and a cross. A side porch was added from the south. The silver grey of tin roofs contrasts with the austere brown of wooden walls. When compared with other beautiful wooden churches, it is interesting to note its steeple-shaped windows, which by their shape remind of the windows usually admired in brick cathedrals.
Inside, the above-mentioned neo-Gothic style prevails. Wood carving is particularly subtle, e.g. openwork arcade above the rood beam. Another visible sign of the style constitute wooden sculptures on the two sides of the altar: the figures of St Peter and St Paul. The main altar with a copy of the painting representing Our Lady of Częstochowa was executed by Italian masters in the 17th century, in the late Renaissance style. The picture of Our Lady is daily covered with the painting of St Catherine.
It is worth paying attention to epitaph plaques and beautiful crucifixes from the 16th century. Look for them in the porches. Neo-Baroque baptismal font was executed in the 19th century. Another charming detail stands out against this background: the tabernacle which was designed in the shape of a crop sheaf.
