ROPICA GÓRNA - Orthodox Church of St. Michael the Archangel
Even though the church is located by the roadside, it is easy to miss it as a ring of thick trees surround it. Therefore, it is worth to be vigilant when visiting Ropica Górna as the church is an important element on the route of wooden sacred architecture monuments associated with the culture of the Lemkos.
CHURCH
IN ROPICA GÓRNA
Until 1949 Ropica Górna was called Ropica Ruska /Russian Ropica. It was dominated by the Greek Catholic community (the Lemkos), which built this splendid church. Right now, it is a Roman Catholic parish. The church was founded in the second half of the 19th century. Its shape is characteristic for the style of wooden churches in this region: tripartite layout characterized by an elongated nave, which is connected with the women’s gallery and the presbytery.
Inside we find a depiction of Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor. This element of the polichromy dates back to the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries. One of the greatest treasures of this place is the 18th century iconostasis. The style of the church is rococo. It is worth paying attention to the rare icon of Saint Onuphrius who is rarely present in the region.
Other wonderful examples of sacred art are two side altars in late Baroque style. The main altar with a baldachin and an ornamented tabernacle complete the picture. On side altars visitors can admire the icon of St. Nicholas and the painting of Madonna and the Child.
Even though the church is located by the roadside, it is easy to miss it as a ring of thick trees surround it. Therefore, it is worth to be vigilant when visiting Ropica Górna as the church is an important element on the route of wooden sacred architecture monuments associated with the culture of the Lemkos.
