WIERZBICA DOLNA - Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Church
IN WIERZBICA DOLNA
The wooden church was built on the east-west axis, therefore we can say that it is oriented. Its log structure is placed on foundations made of stone and the tower has the post-frame structure. The porch, the tower and a smaller presbytery adjoin a wide nave, the shape of which resembles a square.
Once you have entered the church, it is worth paying attention to the coffered ceiling. The gallery, supported by four columns, is connected with triforia. A small fragment of the 17th century ceiling has remained until today. Its polychromy represents the Last Judgment. This fragment is surrounded by a folk Renaissance frame from the same period, decorated with vegetal patterns. The altar comes from the first half of the 18th century and was mainly executed in Late-Baroque style. Among the gems of art that we can admire in the church, it is worth mentioning the sculptures of angels and of the Resurrected Christ. Similarly to other wooden churches, its pulpit deserves our attention. This place played a special role in the places of worship and this is why it used to be so richly decorated. It is also the case in the Wierzbica Dolna church. The local pulpit dates from the 18th century and is decorated with polychrome paintings of four evangelists and of Moses, Aaron and St. John the Baptist.
When searching for beautiful details, you cannot overlook the organ which dates from the 18th century as well as several other elements worth paying attention to. Among the sculptures, take a careful look at the Gothic Pietà, the Gothic crucifix and the Renaissance epitaph with a painted votive portrait executed in the 17th century. Under the ceiling, you will see three authentic knight’s lances.
