TRZEŚCIANKA - St Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church
ORTHODOX CHURCH
IN TRZEŚCIANKA
This Orthodox church was built of wood and has a log structure i.e. horizontally placed wooden beams. The church is divided into three parts, it has one nave, a vestibule and a closed sanctuary. Two towers are well visible from far away. The higher one is quadrilateral and the lower one is octagonal and has an onion dome. In the interwar period, the bigger tower had a clock, but it did not last until modern times. The present green colour of the building is the result of the renovation completed in 2015. At the time the structure was reinforced, the old domes were replaced with gold plated ones and crosses were added at the top. The end of the renovation coincided with the 150th anniversary of the construction of the church. During the ceremony organised at this occasion, a monument commemorating bieżeństwo, i.e. a mass exodus of the population inside Russia in 1915, was inaugurated. The pilgrims visiting the church inside will certainly be enchanted by the three-tiered iconostasis and two altars.
The St Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church is the second in this village. The first was already operational in the 16th century and since the 18th century has been registered in the records as a Uniate Church. Unfortunately it was destroyed during fire in 1835.
Its successor was built thanks to fundraising. After the fundraising ended, the construction took three years and in 1867 the church started its activity. Soon it was surrounded by a wall made of fieldstones. After bieżeństwo took place in 1915, three more years had to pass before the first Orthodox clergyman appeared on this land. It was not until 1928 that the Polish authorities agreed to the restitution of the parish.
Interestingly, a famous prophet Ilja, i.e. Eliasz Klimowicz, was active in the vicinity. His religious sect became very popular in the interwar period. Considered to be the incarnation of a Biblical prophet, he attracted the faithful and their possessions. This allowed him to build his own Orthodox church. No wonder the Orthodox clergymen showed their dislike for this worship. The tension escalated to a point where a confrontation occurred in the Orthodox Church in Trześcianka. In 1933, a priest criticized the prophet and his faithful during the sermon. This led to an outburst of anger and the faithful jostled. The followers of Eliasz were removed from the church by force. The history of the self-proclaimed prophet is told by a play “Prophet Ilja” (also shown on TV), a TV series “The History of the Prophet Eliasz from Wierszalin” and reportage by Włodzimierz Pawluczuk. When the prophet disappeared at the beginning of the war, his faithful scattered.
