HŁOMCZA - Orthodox Church of the Synaxis of the Most Holy Mother of God
ORTHODOX CHURCH
IN HŁOMCZA
The building has a clear tripartite structure: a sanctuary, a nave and a small vestibule, traditionally called the women’s gallery. A sacristy adjoins the sanctuary and when looking from the outside you will notice a two column portico added from the west. The roof is crowned with a hexagonal ridge turret.
The Orthodox church was built in the place of the previous one in 1859. The trees surrounding the area remember the old building. Its construction was initiated by Iwan Snihurski, a Greek Catholic bishop of Przemyśl and a patron of the arts. Very well educated at the University of Lviv and the University of Vienna, while in office, he was known for creating a network of parish schools in Ukraine. He also endowed many scholarships. Under his rule, Przemyśl became the centre of musical education.
Next to the monument there is a campanile made of stone with three bells. The oldest dates back to the 17th century.
Right after World War 2, the Orthodox church was used as a Catholic church. This was also connected with numerous resettlements of the inhabitants. In the sixties, the Eastern Orthodox community prayed here and in 1990 the Greek Catholic parish was restored.
