KLECZKOWO - Church of St. Lawrence
The big church was to be not only a place of worship and prestige, but it was also to guarantee the population growth, so that over time Kleczkowo would receive town privileges. At the beginning of the 16th century, such privileges were granted to the village, however it did not become sufficiently big to keep them.
CHURCH
IN KLECZKOWO
The Kleczkowo church is the pride not only of the village but of the whole region. It is located on the route called “Sacral Gems of Mazovia”. The building is visible from far away as it stands out against the landscape due to its slender, Gothic style and red brick walls. Its history started in the 16th century. The construction of the church was initiated by Stanisław from Budne, a curate and a preacher and the funds were provided by Jakub Kleczkowski. The first design gave it the shape of a basilica i.e. with the central nave and side aisles, where the nave is higher than the aisles. In accordance with such a design, the windows should be located above the roof of side aisles. Over time, the church was rebuilt to become the so-called pseudo-basilica characterized by the central nave higher than the aisles but without windows.
The big church was to be not only a place of worship and prestige, but it was also to guarantee the population growth, so that over time Kleczkowo would receive town privileges. At the beginning of the 16th century, such privileges were granted to the village, however it did not become sufficiently big to keep them. Regardless of the number of the population, Kleczkowo is known for its impressive church that any town could envy.
In 1944, the church was completely destroyed but, fortunately, was rebuilt in the years 1951-1954 preserving the elements that determine its beauty and uniqueness.
The slender structure is oriented along the east-west axis with the entrance located on the western side. This way, those who pray facing the altar in the early hours of the day see the sunlight illuminate the inside of the church.
The high and wide nave and aisles are located next to the presbytery and a rectangular annex holding the sacristy and the treasury. The nave has a chapel on the southern side. All the corners and walls of the aisles and of the presbytery are braced with buttresses. These elements are in fact perpendicular walls that serve as support structures. Thanks to buttresses, the weight of the vault is transferred to the ground. Buttresses are used in churches, but they also appeared in castles and fortresses made of brick or stone.
Inside, we can admire the four-bay nave divided into aisles by three pairs of pillars. Before the war, the church had a net vault which is typical for Gothic. The crossing ribs created a net of rhombuses. After the war, the vault had to be rebuilt and became star-shaped. It is worth visiting the Diocesan Museum where Gothic sculptures can be admired. Wit Stwosz, one of the most illustrious representatives of Gothic art, is their author. The figures of Archangel Gabriel and of Our Lady that he sculpted, were previously permanent elements of the Kleczkowo church furnishings.
