SAKI - St Demetrius Orthodox Church
ORTHODOX CHURCH
IN SAKI
It is not by accident that this church was built in Saki and has St Demetrius as patron saint. According to the local tradition, already in the 15th century, the icon of St Demetrius was to have materialized itself miraculously here. It survived consecutive fires unscathed.
The church was refurbished several times. In the 19th century, the iconostasis was transferred from Dubicze and a new altar was built. In the 20th century the roof was covered with new shingles and the church received a new iron cross. In the 50s, the nave was enlarged and a vestibule was added to it. The last extensive refurbishment of the interior took place in the years 2009 – 2013. When visiting the church, it is definitely worth paying attention to the wooden campanile from the 19th century and the scenic cemetery.
The wooden church has a log structure. It boasts two sacristies, a porch with a veranda and two entrances: the main one from the west and a side one. Above the porch, there is a picturesque cupola. A similar one can be found on top of the quadrilateral tower above the nave. The sanctuary is terminated pentagonally.
The most important element of the church and its very heart is the icon of St Demetrius. It can be found behind the iconostasis. It is placed in a space with a semi-hexagonal termination. In the iconostasis we can admire the icons of the four Evangelists, the Last Supper and representations of Archdeacons: Martyrs Stephen and Michael, and finally the Apostles Peter and Paul. On the side walls of the nave we can see, among others, the icons of St John the Baptist and St Prophet Elijah. The iconostasis is new and dates from the 21st century. It was executed in Thessaloniki and its icons were written on the Holy Mountain Athos.
