Church
IN SMARCHOWICE ŚLĄSKIE
Interestingly, the village itself belonged to Polish and German speaking communities. The geographic dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland mentions Polnisch Marchwitz and Smarchów Polski.
The church, which accompanied the local community, was rebuilt several times, both in the middle of the 19th century and in the 20th century, before World War II. It is composed of a nave and a much smaller presbytery. This oriented building has a log structure reinforced with post-frame structure.
“A log structure” means that walls are made of horizontal wooden logs joined in the corners. The beams overlap in the corners thanks to special notches. The gaps between the logs are filled with chinking, tow etc. and in the old times they used to be filled mainly with moss. This ancient technique has been known since the Slavic times, and it is still being used by folk carpenters in the Podhale or the Kurpie regions.
The roof is made of shingles i.e. small planks made of coniferous wood with a wedge cross-section and a groove along its longer edge. They are interconnected by sliding one plank into the other.
You can start admiring the interior with the main altar. It dates from the 17th century and represents a triptych with crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Christ. It is worth paying attention to the representation of the Eye of Providence at the top of the altar and the date 1603. The pulpit from 1604 will also attract your attention. The church benches also date from the 17th century. The colourful stained-glass windows contribute to the creation of the atmosphere inside the church.
