PILICHOWO - St Mary Magdalene Church
CHURCH
IN PILICHOWO
The church that we are inviting our readers to, is the third one built in this place. It was built in 1719 and rebuilt in 1788, also its patron saint was changed back then. St Dorothy was the first patron saint of the parish but had to make room for St Mary Magdalene.
One of the mysteries and curiosities of the interiors is the neo-Gothic organ, the construction of which was never finished. The instrument was installed in the church around 1900 but it has only three stops, the remaining ones were never executed. Why is that so and who has not finished his/her work? These facts remain unknown.
The church was considerably damaged during a fire in 1870. The clergy house was damaged at that time and so the priests still have to commute from nearby Bulkowo. Nevertheless Pilichowo remains an autonomous parish. The wooden church has a beautiful neo-Gothic ridge turret crowned with a spire. Near the building, a 19th century arcaded campanile was erected.
During World War II the building was closed. It survived, but unfortunately lost one of its bells, which was stolen by the Germans. The second one was hidden by the parishioners; therefore it has remained and is being used today.
Inside the church it is worth paying attention to the Baroque altar. It has ornaments, charming angels and spiral columns so characteristic for this style. The main altar holds the image of Our Lady of Częstochowa from 1910, whereas one of the side altars has the image of St Mary Magdalene. The old baptismal font is a true witness of history as it dates back to the 18th century.
When visiting the church from the outside, it is worth having a camera at hand as there are many beautiful views around! The church is surrounded by fine old trees and beyond, there is a panorama of farmlands.
