BLICHOWO - St Anne Church
CHURCH
IN BLICHOWO
Historically speaking, the church has three “parents”. It was built thanks to the funds of Andrzej and Marianna Zaborowski, but at the initiative of Father Wawrzyniec Żywicki. The construction lasted 3 years and was finalised in the first half of the 18th century. In accordance with the historical records, previously there was a wooden church and a parish, which started operating already in the first half of the 14th century.
The wooden log structure is placed on a foundation made of stone. The roof is covered with a gable roof crowned with a turret, as it is characteristic for wooden churches in Mazovia as well as in other regions of Poland. A sacristy was added from the west, and a porch from the east. The body of the church evolved due to refurbishments and construction works in 1805 and in 1807. Right before World War 2, the nave was enlarged and the ceiling was rebuilt.
Many wooden churches have dark interiors, which create the right mood and against which bright altar decorations stand out. Here, however, the moment you cross the threshold you can admire beautiful ornaments in different colours. The barrel vault is decorated with polychrome paintings executed by Władysław Drapiewski. This outstanding painter was known for his works which adorn more than 120 Polish churches, mainly in Mazovia. Delicate stars and colourful floral ornaments can call up associations with the observation of the night sky with traced out constellations or when you look through a kaleidoscope. Looking at the ceiling, you cannot miss the rood beam with a set of sculptures representing the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ in the Baroque and folk style. They date from the 17th century.
The main altar comes from the turn of the 16th and the 17th century, whereas the two side altars date from the beginning of the 18th century. In the case of the altar to the right, it is worth paying attention to the wooden sculpture of the Crucified Christ from the 17th century and the figures of St John the Evangelist and Our Lady of Sorrows from the 16th century. Right next to them, there is a late-Gothic sculpture of sleeping apostles on the Mount of Olives, among whom we can distinguish St Peter with a sword.
Among other treasures of this place, it is worth mentioning the 18-th century pulpit. It is decorated with a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit and a bust of a trumpeting angel. The wooden baptismal font in the Baroque style dates back to 1775. When looking towards the gallery, we will see the organ front executed around 1870.
