CHURCH
IN CMOLAS
We could say that God Himself indicated this site to build a sacred place of worship. The history of this sanctuary is well documented and begins in 1585. Wojciech Borowiusz, the son of a local nobleman, who was 13 at the time, was to have had a revelation: Jesus Christ surrounded by the saints appeared to him. This event had such a strong impact on this young man that he decided to dedicate his entire life to Catholic spirituality. The history will remember him as a zealous student of the Cracow Academy, first awarded a master’s degree of philosophy and theology, and later a PhD. Next, he became the professor and the dean of these two faculties. Borowiusz also served as a rector of the academy for four terms. At the very same time he pursued a career in the Church, he took holy orders and in 1634 became the parish priest of the collegiate church. He started the cult of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Cmolas.
By 1646 (the date of a documented inspection of the parish) a hospital and a small church were built. Inside the church a painting depicting the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor was hung. In 1748 the so-called “Tables of Bishop Załuski” took note of the painting to be officially recognized as miraculous (“Imago Gratiosa Transfigurationis D[omi]ni in Ecclesia per Commissionem agnita“). Along the years, the faithful left votive offerings next to the painting counting on God’s favour. Today, this miraculous painting is located in the new (built in 1972) parish church, whereas the old one holds its exact copy.
It is worth mentioning that the cult of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Cmolas does not constitute the only chapter in the spiritual history of Cmolas. The first parish was founded there in the 15th century, in 1422 to be precise and in 1489 it became autonomous and covered a big part of the Sandomierz primeval forest.
Silver Passion in the shape of the cross remains after Wojciech Borowiusz as well as candlesticks which can be found among the treasures of the hospital church. One of many interesting elements of its interior decoration to be mentioned is the painting depicting the founder himself. You can find it on the northern wall of the presbytery.
Father Borowiusz is presented next to a reading desk, with his hand placed on the prayer book. In the upper right corner, we can read the date AD 1646 and below the Hołobok coat of arms described with the following letters: ABStDPSF Adalbertus Borovius Sannctae theologiae doctor porchus Sanc-ti Floriani – Wojciech Borowiusz.
In 1735, the lower part of the painting was added, which shows the revelation of 13-year-old Borowiusz and in the background the panorama of Cmolas. This is only one of the elements of a rich polychromy completed with sculptures.
This small, charming and in its own way captivating church is located on a hill, surrounded by a lot of greenery, thus not only its interior but also a walk in the neighbourhood are conducive to religious contemplation and peace of soul.
