ORTHODOX CHURCH
IN NOWOBEREZOWO
The Orthodox church was built as a Uniate church and its founder was Izabela Branicka. This personality is definitely not presented enough during history classes. After she married Jan Klemens Branicki, she quickly came to live with him in Białystok and actively participated in the development of the city and its vicinity. Thanks to her, many schools came into being, including a parish school, for page boys or a girls’ boarding school for daughters of royal court officials. She also supported the construction of churches and invited artists from abroad to Białystok. She was buried in the basement of the archcathedral basilica of the old parish church in Białystok.
At first, the St John the Evangelist Orthodox church was a parish church, but in the 19th century it became a filial church. The Ascension Orthodox church made of brick took over the role of the parish seat.
This 250 year old building has a rectangular plan. Interestingly, it is not oriented. It is made of wood and has a log structure. The weather-boarding means that the structure is reinforced by wooden planks. The church’s roofs are made of metal sheets and the towers are decorated with onion helms with cupolas. In the years 2016 – 2021, the outside as well as the inside of the church has been refurbished. The visitors should pay attention not only to a beautiful iconostasis and rich interior ornaments, but also look up on the ceiling, where they will see an interesting polychromy. Each of the three entrances is decorated with a gable roof supported by four posts.
There is a well next to the church. Every year, on the day of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord and on the day of the patron saint of the church, a ritual of blessing the water takes place.
When visiting Nowoberezowo, it is worth finding the time to visit other monuments in the vicinity: the Ascension Orthodox parish church, the Transfiguration of Jesus Orthodox church near the village of Wygoda and two Orthodox cemeteries.
