RZEPEDŹ - St Nicholas the Wonderworker Orthodox Church
ORTHODOX CHURCH
IN RZEPEDŹ
However, we are visiting Rzepedź due to its architectural gem it has been boasting since 1824, i.e. a wooden Orthodox church with St Nicholas the Wonderworker as patron saint. The current shape of the building is the result of a reconstruction in 1896. It belonged to the Greek Catholic community until the Operation Vistula as a result of which the local Ukrainian population was resettled. Even though some of them tried to return here in the fifties, the church was under the tutelage of Roman Catholics as a funeral chapel. In the seventies, the faithful, despite impediments from the communist authorities, managed to repair the church with their own funds and thus the bishop of Przemyśl allowed them to open it once a week. It was in 1976, and eleven years later the Orthodox church was reopened permanently.
The church is an example of the Lemkos style in Orthodox church building. The wooden structure is placed on a foundation made of stone and is composed of three main parts: a sanctuary, a nave and a women’s gallery. Obviously, this division is not accidental as it is to reflect the divine order of the reality. The sanctuary is the sphere of God, the faithful gather in the nave and the women’s gallery is the symbol of the sinful who are only beginning their spiritual path.
The walls have a log structure with weather-boarding. The wooden building is covered with a tin roof and from a distance three onion-shaped domes of octagonal turrets stand out. When inside, it is worth paying attention to the iconostasis dating from 1896. The polychromy adorning the interior was executed at the same time. The side altars, executed in baroque style, are located near the iconostasis and the third one is located in the sanctuary and is connected with the tabernacle. It is worth paying attention to the icons of Our Lady with the Child, the Blessing Christ, the Virgin and Child with St Anne with St Joachim and St Joseph.
This is not all, as in the vicinity of the church there is a beautiful cemetery with many old tombstones. Among them there is a neo-Gothic tombstone of Stanisław Niezabitowski, officer during the November Uprising, owner of Rzepedź.
