MNICHÓW - The Church of St. Stephen Deacon and Martyr
IN MNICHÓW
Temple dedicated to St. Stephen deacon and martyr, is a monument unique in the scale of the country and even Europe, because it is the only wooden church in Europe that has interior of Rococo character. The church was built of larch wood on the Latin cross plan, it has a log structure covered with an octagonal dome. It is a temple with one nave and a transept. There are additionally two towers on the Western rectangular facade.
In the main altar there is a painting of the Mother of God with the Child surrounded by votive offerings from the 17th century. This image shows similarities to the famous painting from the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. The architect of the temple is unknown. In 1823 or 1836, the church ceased to be a branch of the Mokrsk parish and thus became a parish temple itself. After 1849 an overhaul of the church was carried out. The dome and towers were covered with sheet metal. Around 1917 the shingle roof covering was replaced with galvanized sheet metal. The church has been renovated many times. In the years 2007-2013 the latest overhaul was carried out as part of the subsidiary program “Świętokrzyskie Treasury Wooden and Medieval Architecture trail.” Additionally the underground part of the church was secured. The church services were held in those undergrounds a dozen or so years ago … It is worth noting that the two church bells from 1784 were hidden during the occupation and thus have been preserved.
