CHURCH
IN SŁAWĘCIN
The parish in Sławęcin was founded in 1326. The location of the village of Sławęcin under German law takes place during the reign of Polish king Casimir III the Great. There is a mention of the Sławęcin parish in sources from 1328, suggesting that already in the first half of the 14th century there was a church in the village of Sławęcin. The original church though has not survived. The new church was erected in a new place in 1779 thanks to the efforts of a local priest Michał Dyktanowicz and the owner of Sławęcin village Ignacy Łętowski.
That is the church that has survived to our times. During the 19th century, it was repaired and renovated several times, and in 1886 it was enlarged. The current church in Sławęcin is of a wooden, log construction, tower-less and with single-nave structure, erected on a rectangular plan with a narrower presbytery closed from three sides and a sacristy from the north. The outer walls are reinforced with boards. There is a gable roof, one-ridge roof with a turret, originally covered with shingles, but currently covered with sheet metal. The interior of the church is decorated with a polychrome made in 1890 by the painter Wiśniowiecki. Two multi-figure scenes are shown on the ceiling. The walls are divided with painted pilasters with composite capitals and the figures of saints: the four Evangelists in the presbytery, in the nave on the Southern side of St. Catherine, the patron of the church. The interior furnishings present forms characteristic of the late Baroque and Rococo. In Sławęcin, the image of the Virgin Mary with the Child is depicted in a torso with a child on her left arm, on a silvered, golden corral, smooth background.
